Just saw you are writing your first novel. Hope it is going ok. I sent an extract of my manuscript to an agent today. I did do a chapter book last year but this is my first proper HF novel. What stage are you at ?
This is such a fun and interesting way of looking at creativity!
One of my favourite ways to create, other than writing, is to play music. Just sitting down at the piano for 20, 40, 60 minutes and letting my fingers walk and run and dance is a wonderful way to spend time.
Such an interesting idea! I think my creature and I have been rediscovering each other this year for sure.
And just a note on art... mark-making in ANY form can be freeing, creative, expressive. Please don't tell yourself you can't make art! Splash some colour on a page, create repetitive circles that get bigger and smaller, there is no 'good' here... only fun ☺️
Yes, I so want to have that attitude to art but sometimes it looks rubbish and feels grim 😂 BUT you encourage me to try, so I got my art supplies down from the loft today....first step. I'm tempted to make a plan/aim/diaries/notebook but I think those are all ways to control/avoid. I think I'll just try starting playing, and see what happens... Eek!
Love this. To me your creature reads like an “other” and I can completely connect with this. Sometimes my creativity belongs to the “other Brad” and he’s not the “real” me. But of course he is but learning to trust it has been the challenge. Perhaps as we maintain self-awareness here the better we’ll get at letting that person not just “in” but at recognizing their permanence in our lives.
Nice to meet you here! Well done for contacting an agent, a big step. I'm just on my second draft, so a long way to go yet but getting there slowly. I'm a Classicist too, and fascinated to hear about that letter Galen wrote. Your three strand novel idea sounds brilliant, and I look forward to seeing how it develops....
Yes, music is a huge love for me. The thing I've really got into is composing. I find or write a text, then set it to music. I've never formally learned composing but a great piano teacher encouraged me to follow my feelings and play around. I get so absorbed, and it's an amazing way to process/release feelings. It's been one of those surprise mid life discoveries! I've been avoiding it for a while, but just starting to dip my toe back in again which is scary/exciting. I need to persist to get it back in my life regularly....

Yes! Art is exactly that - play 😃

Yes, it's getting to know the "other" that is also myself. A paradox! I definitely want to embed their permeance in my life ...
